Hong Kong Dance Awards 2009
The Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) was awarded the Hong Kong Dance Award 2009 for its magnificent production of Tricolor and the innovative educational programme - The Evolution of Ballet.
Jewels from the 20th century ballet repertoire - Balanchine's Rubies, Lifar's Suite en Blanc, Tudor's Lilac Garden, together with White Swan pas de deux made up the production of Tricolor, a programme of last year's Le French May. "First-class repertoire is essential for a Company so that dancers can grow and develop, and its audience will be entertained and challenged," said Lin Mei-fang, the Company's Senior Ballet Mistress. "It was a successful and unforgettable performance to showcase the artistry and diversity of our dancers, under the leadership of our ex-Artistic Director John Meehan, and it was further enhanced by live accompaniment from the Hong Kong Sinfonietta."
A well-researched, beautifully produced, and dynamically performed history of ballet - The Evolution of Ballet was staged for over 3,800 students last year. "We were very excited that this programme was extremely well-received, and has enhanced and broadened the artistic horizons of our younger generation, thanks to the inspiration of our ex-director John Meehan," said Shirley Loong, Director of Education and Outreach. This project not only served to educate audiences with its illustration through dance; it was also the product of a close collaboration between design students of the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Company. It provided the hand-on experience for the students to combine class work with real production practice.
As one of the award recipients of this year's Hong Kong Dance Award, The Hong Kong Ballet would like to take this opportunity to thank the Home Affairs Bureau, Leisure and Cultural Services Department, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Dance Alliance, the whole team of our Company as well as our valuable audiences and sponsors. Without their devotion and support, we could hardly have achieved what we have today.
