At the invitation of Beseto Opera Group of Korea, Hong Kong Ballet will perform in theĀ opera production Aida for five performances from 23 to 27 November 2007 at Opera Theatre, Seoul Arts Centre, the premier opera theatre in Korea.
Originally commissioned by Opera Hong Kong, Hong Kong Ballet dancers and rising choreographers Carlo Pacis and Selina Chau created four pieces of dance in Aida, which had its debut in Hong Kong on 13 to 15 October at Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Highly impressed by the outstanding choreographies and performances by the Hong Kong Ballet, Beseto Opera Group invited the Company to participate in their own production in Seoul.
Carlo Pacis and Selina Chau joined the Hong Kong Ballet after graduating from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1998. With emerging choreographic talents, they were named as Choreographic Apprentices in the Company's 2006/07 season and have been given a number of opportunities to create works for productions of Hong Kong Ballet. The Company was invited to perform Carlo's There's a Fly in This Soup in the 1st Asia Pacific Ballet Festival held in Seoul in November 2006. In 2007, Carlo and Selina did the additional choreography for the Company's production of Swan Lake.
Beseto Opera Group was established in 1996 by mezzo soprano, Kang Hwa-ja for the purpose of pursuing international cultural exchanges among Korea, China and Japan, as well as furthering the oneness of Asia, America and Europe through music. The collaboration between Hong Kong Ballet and Beseto Opera Group provides a platform to showcase the Company's talents and locally groomed young choreographers on Asian stage.
