Artistic Director’s Message

Here’s to new beginnings! As we emerge from a challenging year, I’m sure we’re all wondering…what happens now? What’s next? Surprisingly, this past year exploded our creativity to crazy new levels in ways we never dreamed of while keeping our uncompromising commitment to artistic excellence. From our ballerina chefs sharing their culinary secrets to boogying down Elgin Street at 4:00am in a cyberpunk fantasy film and doing serious kungfu on the staircases of Sheung Wan…whaaat? Experiencing how we all came together and actually made these extraordinary projects work, I can confidently say that the best is yet to come.

This fall, we have three large-scale classically oriented works with a revival of the extravagant ALICE (in wonderland), Cynthia Harvey’s gorgeous The Sleeping Beauty and the world premiere of my original Hong Kong-themed The Nutcracker for the holidays. In the winter, we team up with M+, Hong Kong’s new museum of visual culture slated to open this autumn, for an dynamic, immersive experience centred around our precious planet and climate change, with multiple innovative world premieres, sublime music and interactive talks and workshops...

Next, the turn(it)out festival will explore the role of classical ballet in the modern world, featuring The Rule Breakers, pieces by rebellious choreographers whose works are now classics, Yuri Ng’s cherished Ballet Classics For Children: Swan Lake, and HKB Presents American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, a thrilling programme of classical and contemporary works showcasing tomorrow’s international ballet stars. Our season will close with the much-anticipated MADEMOISELLE: the Life of Coco Chanel, a world premiere by international star choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa based on the captivating life of fashion icon and savvy businesswoman Coco Chanel.

It’s been amazing to witness the transformative power of live dance, and I hope you will join us for this inspirational new season as we eagerly dive into what’s coming up next!
