Hong Kong Audiences Thrilled by China Everbright Ltd. proudly presents Giselle

A classic ballet continues to delight in its second week

[Hong Kong – 30 October 2018] A timeless story with supernatural drama, China Everbright Ltd. proudly presents Giselle is a rollercoaster romance of first love, deceit, betrayal and forgiveness. Audiences praised the newly staged production by Septime Webre and South African ballet artist Charla Genn, and were moved by the exceptional performances last week by Venus Villa and Li Jiabo and Chen Zhiyao and Li Lin, in the lead roles of Giselle and Albrecht, respectively.

Partnered by ballet superstar Marcelo Gomes, former Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre, Principal Dancer Jin Yao enthralled audiences at her farewell evening performances on 26 and 27 October. After the 27 October show when she took her final bow, there was a special tribute session onstage for Jin Yao featuring a sentimental video montage of her years at the Company, bouquets of fragrant flowers. Her enthusiastic fans took many photos and had the opportunity to bid farewell to her at the post-performance autograph session.

On 27 October, the Company hosted a cocktail reception which was attended by many guests. With China Everbright Ltd.’s generous donation to the Accessibility Fund for the third consecutive year, two beneficiary organisations, We R Family Foundation and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Tuen Mun Integrated Services Centre received complimentary tickets for 45 people to attend the 28 October matinee performance.

Four more Giselle performances will be staged in the second week, featuring guest stars Sarah Lane and Matthew Golding, who will partner Principal Dancers Wei Wei and Ye Feifei, respectively. Venus Villa will dance with Shen Jie.

About Giselle

This is the poignant story of an innocent, kind-hearted peasant girl who falls in love with a handsome young villager, Albrecht, but soon discovers that he has lied to her – not only is he a nobleman and not a peasant, but he is also engaged to be married. Learning of her sweetheart’s deceit breaks Giselle’s heart, and she goes mad before succumbing to an untimely and tragic death. In revenge for Giselle’s loss, the Wilis, the vengeful spirits of brides who died before their wedding day, condemn Albrecht to dance until he dies. However, Giselle’s enduring love manages to protect him until daybreak, when the spell is broken and Giselle and the Wilis fade away, leaving Albrecht alone and full of sorrow.
