Hong Kong Ballet’s 1st visit to Sha Tin since 2013 with Coppélia

Spreading the joy of ballet with five performances at Sha Tin Town Hall and a community visit to Cheshire Home, Sha Tin

[Hong Kong – 1 February 2017] One of the world’s most popular comic ballets is back! Coppélia is a sparkling tale of a mysterious inventor, his life-sized doll and an inquisitive young couple, filled with magic, mischief and many comical delights. Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s lively story The Sandman, this light-hearted ballet is full of warmth, romance and laughter and has been entertaining fans of all ages all over the world.

Ronald Hynd’s delightful yet virtuosic choreography is a showcase for Hong Kong Ballet dancers’ classical technique as well as their comedic and acting skills. With gorgeous sets and costumes by award-winner Roberta Guidi di Bagno and enchanting music by Léo Delibes, the ballet's bright and jovial mood makes it the perfect family entertainment.

Artistic Director Madeleine Onne stated “I am happy to present once more this beautiful version of Coppélia by Ronald Hynd, which I personally think is one of the best versions in the world. Truly entertaining and filled with dance and humour, Coppélia is a perfect ballet for the whole family. We will feature three different casts to let all of our remarkable dancers shine in the various dancing and acting parts the performance has to offer. We also are happy to be back in Sha Tin where we always feel such tremendous support from the audience!”

To realize the Company’s mission to connect with audiences and the community at large, Hong Kong Ballet actively goes outside of its homebase, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, to visit different suburban areas with its high-quality artistic offerings each year. Following our huge success with Swan Lake at Yuen Long Theatre last August, Hong Kong Ballet once again returns to Sha Tin Town Hall after its last visit with The Sleeping Beauty in 2013.

It is Hong Kong Ballet’s firm belief that the beautiful art form of ballet can inspire and excite, and that it should be enjoyed by all. Thanks to our many patrons contributing to Accessibility Fund, the Company will offer 185 complimentary tickets to students and families from Sha Tin to enjoy the matinee performances on 25 and 26 March 2017. In addition, the Company will give back to the community by paying a visit to Cheshire Home, Sha Tin in late February 2017. Disabled patients will be treated to a Coppélia storytelling session with dance demonstration by the Company’s dancers dressed in full costume. Our dancers will also spend time talking with the patients and sharing their experiences about dancing in the production, bringing some cheer as well as a taste of this ballet to those who may not be able to see the performances.

Coppélia will run from 24-26 March 2017 at Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall for five performances. Tickets are priced at $300, $200 and $100, available at URBTIX now. Suitable for ages 3 and above.

About Coppélia
In the sleepy little village of Galicia, a beautiful girl sits alone on a balcony reading her book. The local flirt, Franz, walks by and is instantly captivated by her beauty, but what poor Franz doesn’t know is that the beautiful girl is actually a life-size doll named Coppélia! She has been created by Dr. Coppélius, a lonely old inventor, whose dearest wish is for his beautiful clockwork girl to come to life and keep him company in his old age. Franz, infatuated by the dancing doll, breaks into the eccentric inventor’s house to try and meet her. Dr. Coppélius hatches a plan to use Franz’s life force to animate his beautiful doll, but Franz’s fiancée Swanilda decides to impersonate the doll in order to play a prank on Franz, and chaos ensues! The charming scenes of frivolity and playful deception eventually result in a joyful celebration of the lovers’ wedding.
