HKBALLET | WORKSHOPS's fun, enriching Adult Workshops include ballet and fitness classes.  It's a great way to stay in shape, experience and enjoy ballet through classes taught by professional Hong Kong Ballet artists!

Classes will be taught at Hong Kong Ballet Studios in Happy Valley. Limited spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Beginners Ballet

It’s never too late for anyone of any age to learn ballet. Study the fundamentals of ballet while improving posture, flexibility and balance in a welcoming environment. This is the perfect level for students who have no prior dance experience or knowledge of ballet terminology. ​Come sweat with us and get moving!

*This level is geared towards students age 13 & upwho have 0-2 years of dance experience. This class also welcomes senior learners.
*Beginners 2 on Saturday is suitable for students who have taken beginners class in previous seasons, or have some experience in dance.

Intermediate Ballet

This class is designed for students with a fundamental understanding of ballet. Participants will build upon their ballet terminology and focus on technique and placement while emphasising musicality in a safe and supportive atmosphere. As students gain a comprehensive understanding of barre and centre work, they will be challenged with combinations at a faster pace.

*This level is geared towards students age 13 & up; It is recommended that students have 5-7+ years of previous ballet training.

Barre Fit

Barre Fit is an elegant, easy to follow class that seamlessly blends strength training with ballet movements. Our instructor, a professional HKB dancer, will focus on proper form and posture and provide safe modifications for students of all levels. This new fitness class is a flow-based workout that uses the ballet barre to tone muscles and increase overall stamina. Get a lean, strong ballet body today!

Faculty

Artistic Director of Hong Kong Ballet/ Artistic Advisor

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US from 1999-2016. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US from 1993-1999. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation, launching an annual international Festival for Creativity in Washington DC in June 2018.

During Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet, the institution’s budget grew by 500%, and it enjoyed unprecedented advances in the scope and quality of its work on stage, in the size and reach of its professional school and in the development of several far-reaching community engagement programmes that he founded. Webre also launched an array of artistic initiatives, including The American Experience, which developed great works of literature like The Great Gatsby and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises into full-length ballets.

As a choreographer, Webre’s works appear in the repertoires of ballet companies throughout North America, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Colorado Ballet, Ballet West, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet Austin, Ballet Memphis, Milwaukee Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, and many others, and he has worked frequently in theatre as well as opera. His new work for HKB, Romeo + Juliet, set in 1960s Hong Kong, will have its world premiere in June 2021. As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He has served on the board of Dance/USA and on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York and Seoul. Webre's work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.


Artistic Advisor

Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Luis R. Torres was previously the Ballet Master with Les Ballets Jazz De Montréal. He graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Dance and Psychology and completed a Master of Fine Arts from George Mason University. Torres has enjoyed an extensive dance career with Ballet Arizona, Ballet Theatre of Maryland and The Washington Ballet, where he performed as a Soloist and Principal Dancer. Torres created roles in many works by world renowned choreographers and has held the positions of Ballet Master at Chamber Dance Project, The Washington Ballet’s Studio Company and Trainee Program, Adjunct Professor at George Mason University and Repetiteur for Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Septime Webre as well as Guest Teacher/Choreographer.


Instructor

Irene Lo was a former Coryphée of Hong Kong Ballet. She was the recipient of Hong Kong Dance Award in 1999, awarded by Hong Kong Dance Alliance and received the “Most Promising Dancer” award from the Friends of Hong Kong Ballet in 2000. Lo was also invited to be the adjudicator for Asian Grand Prix as well as Philippine Dance Cup in Manila. In recent years, she had taught in South Africa and Malaysia.

Currently, Lo is a faculty member of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) full-time, ballet and yoga instructor for City Contemporary Dance Company(CCDC), Hong Kong Dance Company and a faculty member of Hong Kong Ballet’s Classical Ballet Training Programme. Lo is also a certified Yoga and Aerial Yoga instructor.

Lo was appointed Rehearsal Mistress for Children Dancers with Hong Kong Ballet in Peter Pan, Alice (in Wonderland) in 2021 and The Nutcracker in 2021.  

Recently, Irene was nominated for the "Outanding performance by a Female dancer 2020" by Hong Kong Dance Alliance with her Woman on pointe in Helen Lai's "Rite of Spring". Irene Lo was currently awarded the full scholarship by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund 2021 for her postgraduate MFA Dance studies at the HKAPA.

Coryphée

Born in Stouffville, Canada, Jessica Burrows graduated from Canada's National Ballet School and danced with The National Ballet of Canada before joining Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) in 2010. She was promoted to Coryphée in 2015, joined Boston Ballet in 2017 as an Artist and returned to HKB in 2019.

With HKB, Burrows has been featured in works by Jorma Elo, Val Caniparoli, Alexei Ratmansky, Terence Kohler, Wang Xin Peng, Kinsun Chan, George Balanchine and Marius Petipa, among others. With Boston Ballet, she performed principal and soloist roles in Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker, William Forsythe’s Pas Parts and Sage Humphries’ YOU, to name a few. Burrows danced in Natalia Makarova's Giselle during exchange performances with The Royal Swedish Ballet in 2013.

Corps de Ballet

Born in Hong Kong, Jeremy Chan started his ballet training at Jean M. Wong School of Ballet and received the Tsinforn C Wong Memorial Scholarship to study at The Royal Ballet School in London. He graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor's degree in Classical Dance and then joined Hong Kong Ballet as a Corps de Ballet member. Chan performed in the 2020 Prix de Lausanne Finals Interludes and won third place in the 2016 Youth American Grand Prix in New York.

Coryphée

Born in Hong Kong, Leung Chunlong graduated from Beijing Dance Academy in 2009 and from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2011, with a concentration in Ballet. He joined Hong Kong Ballet as a member of the Corps de Ballet the same year and was named Coryphée in 2014. 

With Hong Kong Ballet, Leung has danced principal and featured roles including Jewels in Cynthia Harvey’s The Sleeping Beauty, Fritz and Rat King in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Gaston in Val Caniparoli's Lady of the Camellias and Pinocchio in Pär Isberg’s Pinocchio. He has also performed in John Meehan's Swan Lake, Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Ronald Hynd's Coppélia, Natalie Weir’s Turandot, George Balanchine’s Serenade, Jiří Kylián's Petite Mort, Nacho Duato’s Castrati, Alexei Ratmansky’s Le Carnaval des Animaux, Jorma Elo's Shape of Glow, Edwaard Liang’s Sacred Thread and Fei Bo’s Shenren Chang .

His choreographic works included L’espoir (2017) and tʃHey (2016). He received an Outstanding Performance Award at the Taoli Cup Dance Competition in 2003.

Corps de Ballet

Born in Taichung, Taiwan, Lin Chang-yuan Kyle trained at Taipei National University of the Arts and Kirov Academy of Washington, DC. He then became an apprentice with Columbia Classical Ballet and later graduated on full scholarship from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Lin joined Hong Kong Ballet as a Corps de Ballet member in 2017.

With Hong Kong Ballet, Lin has performed the featured roles of Chinese Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, John Darling and Tootles in Septime Webre’s Peter Pan, March Hare and Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum in Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland) and the Mandarin Narrator in Yuri Ng’s Ballet Classics for Children: Swan Lake. He has also danced in Septime Webre and Charla Genn’s Giselle, Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Webre’s The Great Gatsby, Alexei Ratmansky’s Le Carnaval des Animaux, Wayne Mcgregor’s Chroma, Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's Sombrerismo, Yuh Egami and Hu Song Wei Ricky’s The Rite of Spring and Hu Song Wei Ricky’s When You See.

Preparation for Classes

  1. Please arrive at the venue 5-10 minutes early for registration. 
  2. It is mandatory to wear a mask during the class until further notice. 
  3. Proper ballet attire and ballet bun are required for ballet students. For fitness classes, comfortable clothes or fitness attire are accepted.
  4. Yoga and Pilates participants are recommended to bring their own mat for hygienic purposes. 
  5. Please take good care of your belongings and do not bring any valuables.
