Born in Liaoning, China, Zhang Xuening trained at Shen Yang Conservatory of Music and joined Guangzhou Ballet in 2009. She continued her training at Beijing Dance Academy and graduated in 2011. She joined Hong Kong Ballet as a member of the Corps de Ballet in 2015.


With Hong Kong Ballet, Zhang has danced featured roles including Lead Pirate Women and Odalesques in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Spanish Doll and Russian Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Bolero in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, and performed in John Meehan's Swan Lake, Cynthia Harvey’s The Sleeping Beauty, Terence Kohler’s The NutcrackerRudi van Dantzig’s Romeo and JulietRonald Hynd's Coppélia,  Pär Isberg’s Pinocchio, Val Caniparoli's Lady of the Camellias, George Balanchine’s Serenade, Jiří Kylián's Petite Mort and Sechs Tänze, Christopher Wheeldon’s Rush, Alexei Ratmansky’s Le Carnaval des AnimauxJorma Elo's Shape of GlowEdwaard Liang’s Sacred Thread, Trey McIntyre’s A Day in the Life and Fei Bo’s Shenren Chang.


Zhang won third prize in the Female Junior Division Group at the Taoli Cup Dance Competition in 2009.
