Principal Dancer

Born in Zhejiang, China, Shen Jie trained at Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art, Guangzhou Dance School and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He joined Hong Kong Ballet in 2007, was named Coryphée in 2012 and Soloist in 2013 and became Principal Dancer in 2016.

With Hong Kong Ballet, Shen has danced principal and featured roles including Basilio in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Fritz in both Stephen Jefferies’ and Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Franz in Ronald Hynd’s Coppélia, Pinocchio of Pär Isberg’s Pinocchio, Romeo and Mercutio in Rudi van Dantzig’s Romeo and Juliet, Blue Bird in Cynthia Harvey’s The Sleeping Beauty, Camille in Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow, Gustave in Val Caniparoli’s Lady of the Camellias, Pao Yu in Wang Xin Peng’s The Dream of the Red Chamber, Young Uncle Tak in Yuri Ng’s Firecracker and Young Emperor and Frog Prince in Yuri Ng’s The Frog Prince- A Ballet Chinois, Pas de Quatre in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Jester in Natalia Conus’ Swan Lake Act III. He has also been featured in Jiří Kylián's Petite Mort and Sechs Tänze, Nacho Duato’s Castrati, Jorma Elo’s Shape of Glow, Fei Bo’s Shenren Chang and Edwaard Liang’s Sacred Thread.

Shen won Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer at the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2016 for his role of Romeo in Rudi van Dantzig’s Romeo and Juliet (2015). He was also nominated for the same award in 2016 for his role of Pinocchio in Pär Isberg’s Pinocchio (2015), in 2015 for his role of Basilio in Nina Ananiashvilli's Don Quixote (2015) and in 2014 for his role in Nacho Duato’s Castrati (2013). Additionally, Shen was nominated for the prestigious Prix Benois de la Danse for his role of Pao Yu in Wang Xin Peng’s The Dream of the Red Chamber in 2014.
