The 2020/21 season is about LOVE, pure and simple. This precious four-letter word informs absolutely everything at Hong Kong Ballet—love of being dance artists and love for our amazing city, which has seen and experienced so much this past year. Love fuels the dedicated work we do on stage and drives the innovative ways we engage with the community. Love is not about getting—it's about giving.
This season will give you the exuberant Don Quixote, with a sassy, confident woman falling in love with a mischievous barber, the classic The Nutcracker, bringing loved ones together during the holidays, and an original world premiere of the passionate Romeo + Juliet, set in 1960s Hong Kong with the star-crossed lovers. Mozart En Pointe | Chiyan Wong’s Ravel will explore our love of extraordinary music by Mozart and Faure in a new collaboration with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and Balanchine’s Jewels is filled with dance inspired by love for neoclassicism and sparkling 20th century drive and energy.
Expressing our love for ballet and our impulse for exploration is our groundbreaking turn(it)out festival, a two-week celebration of dance, featuring the explosive BINGE-WORTHY, innovative five(by)six, joyful Ballet Classics for Children: Cinderella and sensuous, late-night The Orpheus Cabaret, as well as a dizzying array of fringe activities and engaging experiences.
We love that you watch us dance, but we also want you to dance with us. Our newly expanded HKBALLET | WORKSHOPS programme for adults and children is now offered in two locations: at Hong Kong Cultural Centre and in our newly-renovated Happy Valley studios. Each workshop series is tied to a classic from our repertoire, and in addition to offering a warm, supportive environment, high-quality training and advancement certificates for each level, adults and children also learn choreography in each class and have the opportunity to perform for family and friends in informal studio showings at the end of each semester. Learning ballet has never been more fun!
Love is not static—it grows. The limitless potential for growth—for discovery, for being surprised, for finding joy in the little things—are all what makes up love. This season we want to share our LOVE with you and give you some breathtaking moments and unforgettable memories!
